We don’t market site visits, in fact we try to avoid them if possible. Site visits are the perfect opportunity to give specific free advice, and architects just can’t help themselves. Apart from the temptation problem there are liability issues too. Our preference is a meeting at our office, or somewhere neutral like a bar or cafe. If the site visit can’t be avoided it is $300/hr, and this is money well earned , as it can be taxing keeping potential clients off the topic of resolving problems right there on the spot.

I think that the gut feeling is important, however, you have developed a system to tackle these up front issues, and first and foremost, you need to be faithful to your system. I can understand the pressure on you to fall back to the old ways, this comes up all the time for me too, and it is difficult not to cave in. I am pretty sure that you don’t want to turn this one into a learning experience, and I am certain that you don’t have the time for this either. Take a line out of Disney’s ‘Frozen’ and ‘let it go’.

Mike, our niche came out of left field after bashing around with the obvious project categories, and not coming up with anything at the beginning. Like Dave, it took a while for us too. It was right there all along but we didn’t see it for trying too hard.

Nice one Roderick, I don’t know anything about a video but grab yourself a copy of ‘Million Dollar Consulting Proposals’ by Alan Weiss. It’s all in there.

                  Nice response.
Brings it back to business instead of some implied favor, and you haven’t given away anything.
I get similar requests from all manner of people, including the landlord, and have to move into a position so I am in control of the situation too.
It can become a bit of a game sometimes.
I’ve found that asking some of the curly questions that are included in the AMA sample scripts work a treat.
