      I use hourly for residential (too emotional and variable for fixed rates) and lump sum for commercial clients. Most of my clients, even the ones who prefer hourly, don’t like percentage as they feel its not indicative of the work you need to put in or the value of the work. I agree with that and do a high hourly or lump sum that reflects the value of the work (not necessarily the time it takes )

        You forget how easily some of this stuff comes to you, but it might as well be rocket science to those who are not architects. It was well worth the money he paid and quick income for me.

          It is such a small amount, why not keep it totally separate from your design fee? That way you won’t run into that problem again. Think about it from your client’s perspective. What’s $750 in the overall scheme of your landscape design, one bush? (I have no idea what plants cost, but you get the picture).
